India is now the heart-attack capital of the world, with cases in the 25–40 age band rising faster than anywhere else. The good news: most early cardiac risk is reversible with three sustainable habits.
Move 30 minutes a day — any way
You don't need a gym membership. A brisk 30-minute walk five days a week reduces cardiovascular risk by 35%, per the Indian Heart Association. Take stairs. Walk during phone calls. Bike to the market.
Halve your refined-carb intake
White rice, white bread, biscuits, and sugary chai add up. Replace half with millets, whole wheat rotis, and unsweetened tea. Your morning idli is fine; the 4 PM samosa isn't.
Sleep 7 hours, every night
Chronic sleep deprivation raises resting heart rate and blood pressure. Phone away by 11. No coffee after 4 PM. Consistent sleep–wake times matter more than total hours.
Get a baseline at 30
One blood test — total cholesterol, fasting glucose, blood pressure, and (if family history) Lp(a) — gives you a starting line. Repeat every two years. Most heart events are preventable when caught a decade early.
